Target grid bowling

There are a number of bowling drills that players can do to improve their accuracy in terms of direction [LINE] and distance [LENGTH]. One way is to bowl at a TARGET.

What do you need?
2 marker cones, 1 tennis ball or MILO Kiwi Cricket ball, chalk per pair

How do you play?
1. Draw a ‘Regular’ or ‘Hop Scotch’ target grid on a concrete or asphalt surface using chalk as shown in the diagrams

2. Set up a marker cone 10 metres away on either side or end of the grid

3. Each player to stand behind a marker cone and then to take turns to either stand and bowl, or run in and bowl overarm from beside his/her marker cone towards his/her partner to land on the grid

4. For the ‘Regular Grid’ players to count their score from an agreed number of deliveries [eg. 12 each]. The player with the highest score is the winner

5. For the ‘Hop Scotch Grid’ players to land their ball on each grid square in sequence from 1-8 or from 8-1, depending upon which end they are bowling from. The player who completes the sequence first is the winner

Variations:

  • Move the marker cone further away to increase the distance between the bowler and the target
  • Adjust the size of the grid
  • Change the value of each of the grid squares
  • Give the bowler another turn immediately if in the ‘Regular Grid’ a ‘4’ is hit or in the ‘Hop Scotch Grid’ the correct number is hit
